Dual Fuel Systems in Hillsborough, NJ
Heat pumps are one of the most popular ways to heat and cool homes. Using the technology of an air conditioner, but adding the ability to switch the direction they work, heat pumps can provide either heating or cooling for a household.
But heat pumps have a drawback, which is that during extreme cold weather they may begin to lose energy efficiency, making it hard for them to keep a house warm without creating steep energy bills. This is where a dual fuel system, also called a hybrid heat pump, comes in. These comfort systems provide the same cooling and heating ability of heat pumps, but with a back-up heater to assist during the coldest periods.
If you’re interested in a hybrid heat dual fuel system, or you wish to schedule repairs or maintenance for one, Pezz Electrical Services LLC is the contractor to call. We’ve kept homes in Hillsborough, NJ and throughout Central New Jersey comfortable for more than two decades.
What Is a Dual Fuel Heat Pump?
Basically, a duel fuel system is a combination of a standard heat pump with a secondary heater that runs on a separate energy source. The back–up heater is usually a furnace, one that either connects to a natural gas line or runs off propane. When a heat pump is working in cooling mode or heating mode during mild cold weather, the back–up heater won’t run.
When the outdoor temperature drops below the economic balance point, i.e. the point where the heat pump will struggle to remove enough heat from the outside to work efficiently, the secondary heater activates. The heater will run to make up the efficiency loss for as long as necessary. Then it will shut off.
The Benefits of a Hybrid Heat Pump
Using a dual fuel system makes the numerous advantages of a heat pump available to many more homes than before. Heat pumps are energy efficient systems that drain less power than conventional furnaces, particularly electric furnaces. The back–up furnace only needs to run occasionally, so it won’t create a significant rise in energy bills. And because the secondary heater can run on propane, it isn’t necessary to have a connection to a gas line to be able to have an effective dual fuel heat pump for your house.
