Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators in Hillsborough, NJ

Here’s one of the major dilemmas for keeping a home comfortable: allowing fresh air into a house improves the air quality, but it also brings in unwanted temperatures that place extra strain on the heater and air conditioner. During a cold winter night, you don’t want a window open at the same time that the furnace is blasting away. And on a roasting summer day, it’s foolish to open up the house to the outside while running the air conditioner. It seems as if you can have comfortable indoor temperatures or fresh air, but you can’t have both.

But that’s actually false, because a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) and an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) are devices that make it easy to bring in fresh outdoor air and recover the energy that might otherwise to be lost to the outside. To find out more about these helpful indoor air quality installations, or to arrange for service for one, get in touch with Pezz Electrical Services LLC. We offer comfort and safety to Hillsborough, NJ and the surrounding areas.

What Is the Purpose of Energy and Heat Recovery Ventilators?

HRV and ERV systems are designed to allow fresh air to enter the ventilation system of a home through an outdoor vent. The air then goes through a process called counter–flow heat exchange that pre–heats or pre–cools it. The air afterwards enters your home closer to the desired indoor temperature, and this takes a tremendous amount of stress off the AC and heater.

More detail on how it works: The HRV/ERV runs the fresh outdoor air through an opposite current of stale indoor air. In cold weather, the cool outdoor air will gain heat from the warm indoor air. In hot weather, the warm indoor air will lose heat to the cool indoor air. Essentially, the system "recovers" the energy originally used to cool or heat the indoor air and passes it on to the incoming air. You’ll enjoy a more pleasant indoor environment without making massive sacrifices on your energy bills.

Choosing between an HRV and ERV System

"What’s the difference between an ERV and an HRV?" you’re probably asking. The answer is, "Not much," but your home will be suited more to one than the other. The major difference between the two is that an energy recovery ventilator also transfers moisture between the two currents of air, so it assists with humidity control. However, a heat recovery ventilator is more effective in colder climates. Trust to your professional installer to decide on which type of ventilator will do the exact job you require from it.
